Nobody is treated better than anybody else.
We make people feel loved.
We treat everyone like they are family.
According to your incredible, loving kiddos, that’s how we treat the people in our community. Like family. We definitely felt that love this past week.
Beverly had the amazing opportunity to be part of the Upstart Lab, which meant spending three days away in California. We were all excited for the opportunity, even though we would miss her. We made arrangements weeks ago for a well-loved, former Makom Community teacher to fill in during Beverly’s time away. Everything was set and ready to go. And then on Monday, just after Beverly had arrived in California, the substitute called out sick.
First we called down the rest of our list of potential subs. No one was available for Tuesday and Wednesday. Two Greenfield parents were in contact with Beverly about more potential subs. Anna started calling through her friends to see if any were available to fill in. I texted several of my friends too.
When it became clear that we weren’t finding anyone to substitute on Tuesday, more of our families jumped into action to ensure that we could still run a successful afternoon at Makom Community. A Chester Arthur parent stepped up to wait with kids from that school until Anna could get there to bring them to Makom after doing her two other pickups. A Perelman family babysitter covered the pickup from their bus stop.
On Wednesday we found someone to fill in until 5:00, which helped us cover almost everything. Typically on Wednesdays Anna brings a group of students back down to the Chester Arthur playground for their families to pick them up from there. With only two of us working the last hour, though, Anna couldn’t leave. So with only a few hours’ notice, another Arthur parent arranged to pick up not only her own kids but also kids from two other families and brought them all home at the end of the day.
The moral of the story is that we are an amazing community. Everybody was taken care of. I certainly felt loved and supported. We treated each other like family. Thank you!
