Makom Community at Home: Virtual Jewish Enrichment Program

Your children in grades Pre-K – 4th grade are invited to join Makom Community for 3 days a week of Jewish enrichment through virtual learning!

About Makom Community
Located in Center City Philadelphia, Makom Community is a Jewish enrichment center that provides high quality Jewish Education as Afterschool Enrichment. We empower parents to build a Jewish life that is meaningful for their family. Makom Community cultivates fluency and comfort in Jewish tradition through our joyful youth and family experiences. We are a community that is committed to creating a more just world and building a Jewish community that is open to anyone who wants to engage with Jewish traditions.

During March 2020, when the Philadelphia schools went virtual, Makom Community also went virtual. During the course of four months, Makom Community provided Afterschool Enrichment. Kiddos logged on to Zoom and

  • Engaged in text study
  • Asked challenging and important questions about how and why the text is relevant to their world today
  • Worked on individual projects that reflected on that day’s text learning
  • Mastered tefilah (prayer) skills
  • Spent time with dedicated and inspiring Jewish educators
  • Participated in community wide tefilah each afternoon
  • And so much more!

How is Makom Community going virtual for this school year?
For children and families across America this school year is going to be different! We know that some students will be doing virtual learning all year and other families aren’t quite ready to send their children to in-person learning. Makom Community wants to be there to support families who are interested in joining our community to engage in Jewish learning through an online platform, whether they are local to Philadelphia or elsewhere. We will build from what we did this past spring for our virtual community.

When does Makom Community meet online?
Makom Community will meet online 3 days a week (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday).
Our youngest learners PreK-K will meet for 30 minutes at two different times in the day. The first chunk will be a storytime experience of studying Jewish text. The second time will be Tefilah: Prayer, Music, and Movement. Our older learners 1st-5th grade will meet for 90 minutes for text exploration, tefilah, and projects around that week’s text study. We will solidify a time once we know what timing will look like for students’ virtual school days and know more about what time zones our learners are coming from.

When will Makom Community at Home begin?
We want to give everyone time to adjust to this new school year before we get together online to create this virtual community. Makom Community at Home will begin the week of September 8.

Cost:
3 Days a Week – 390/month

Frequently Asked Questions

This sounds great! Is there a deadline to register?
We are asking all families to register by August 24 so we can finalize that we have enough enrollment to make this program happen. If you intend to enroll, please sign up by this date so we can make sure we have enough students to make this program happen.

What materials do I need?
The most important material is for your child to have access to an electronic device that can access Zoom. Occasionally our programming will include projects with common arts and crafts materials. If our staff create out of the box projects, we will make sure to get you the appropriate materials!

Do I need Jewish learning before my child joins Makom Community?
Not at all! We welcome children and families from all backgrounds. Our teachers excel at making sure all kiddos are having fun and learning.

What happens if I sign up to reserve a spot and then the schedule doesn’t work for me?
Your $200 enrollment fee will be fully refundable until we finalize the schedule the week of August 24. We will ask you to confirm participation by August 31.
